PureSense: Irrigation Technology to Live Through Drought

Jul 3, 2009

I grew up in Southern California during the beginning of the worst multi-year drought in California’s history. We sang “if it’s yellow leave it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down” at summer camp. My mother timed my showers and started screaming at the four-minute mark. We cringed at the sight of our azure swimming pool. We thought it couldn’t get any worse.... -- CLICK HERE to Continue Reading and Comment

World Centric Compostable-Ware for a Greener 4th of July

Jul 3, 2009

The 4th of July celebrations are almost upon us. The 4th of July weekend is a good time to re-think what products we use. Before you break out the disposable plates and plastic flatware, consider a few facts about our country’s solid waste . The U.S. produces 70 percent of the world’s solid waste, and 80 percent of U.S. products are used once and then thrown away. Paper is 37 percent of all the waste in the U.S., and paper waste in landfills emits methane. Landfills are the largest source of methane emissions (32 percent), which has a warming effect 23 times greater than carbon dioxide. Compostable products are better alternatives to plastic disposables. Founded in 2004, World Centric sells compostable products made from renewable sources. The company’s website pointedly states that “every action has an impact on the well-being of our planet.” Compostables, according to World Centric, “provide eco-friendly alternatives to everyday consumption choices, which can help minimize social & economic inequalities, reduce the impact of our consumption on the environment and help create a better and sustainable world.” ... -- CLICK HERE to Continue Reading and Comment

How to Stay Cool in a Crumbling Economy

Jul 3, 2009

Sometimes you can eat your words, and they taste good. LA's Coolhaus has taken the staid category of the ice cream truck and brought it inventively into our time. Using local and organic ingredients whenever possible, these ice cream sandwiches, all centered around an architectural theme, come in both "prefab" (generally offered) flavors, like Mies Vanilla Rohe, Mintimalism, and Frank Behry, and can be custom designed on request, either on the spot or as an ongoing exclusive flavor, like Renzo Pie-Ano launching soon at Wurstkuche . Coolhaus is an example of what the founders call "Farchitecture" - the exploration of the intersection of food and architecture, using disciplines not typically associated with each other to enhance the execution. ... -- CLICK HERE to Continue Reading and Comment

First Solar-powered Car Carrier Shines in Long Beach

Jul 3, 2009 (17 minutes ago)

While ocean ship operators were digesting news of a pending major rule from the Environmental Protection Agency on vessel air emissions, another vision of the future occurred at the Port of Long Beach , CA. A Toyota car carrier partially powered by solar energy docked at the port. The Auriga Leader is the first such green-technology-equipped car carrier to ply the high seas and it's about time. The vessel is outfitted with 328 solar panels that can generate up to 40 kilowatts, decreasing demand on the ship's diesel-powered auxiliary engines for electricity, thus cutting down pollution, the port says.... -- CLICK HERE to Continue Reading and Comment

How Wimbledon Uses Mass Appeal for Philanthropy

Jul 3, 2009

Photo Source: Fotosports / R. Parker As hoards of tennis fans cued in line for hours today, hoping to get a glimpse of Andy Roddick or Roger Federer on Centre Court, the organizers of the world’s premiere tennis event offered a concession to those unlucky enough not to get in this morning: Resales. While Wimbledon has been praised for not over-commercializing this year’s tournament, the reselling of tickets, at first mention, may seem like an attempt to institutionalize scalping. As original ticket holders exit the grounds, they have the option to make unwanted tickets available for other fans (either by depositing the actual tickets at select kiosks throughout the grounds, or if they want to keep them as a souvenir, having the barcodes scanned upon leaving so that new tickets may be generated). There is one big and important difference between this system, however, and the guys that stand outside stadium gates at baseball or football games. Beyond the fact that prices aren’t ridiculously inflated, all proceeds Wimbledon generates from ticket resales are donated to charity. ... -- CLICK HERE to Continue Reading and Comment

Organic Odor Eraser from Poo-Pourri

At last, an organic way to eliminate odors before taking a crap. I’m so sick of all those harsh chemicals I usually use to spray the toilet before going number two. Climate Change Causes Sheep Shrinkage

Jul 3, 2009

Many years ago, I bought a beautiful wool sweater in Scotland. It was cream colored cable knit and I loved it. I wore it while traveling and it got a bit filthy. While in France, I decided to wash it at a public Laundromat and set the machine to C for Cold. The only problem is that in France C stands for Chaud, which means hot, and my sweater came out of the wash the size and weight of a small brick. It was upsetting. It turns out the same principle that applies to Scottish wool actually applies to Scottish ...

Writing on the Green IdeaPaint Wall

Jul 3, 2009

IdeaPaint says it has the most environmentally friendly dry-erase product on the market.  As you can see from these images, the product is applied to your choice of walls, and about seven days later, it's ready to be used.  It's just perfect for the brilliant, A Beautiful Mind types, but I realize that many of you never have and never will use a dry-erase product.  If you do, give IdeaPaint a look.  The company claims green attributes in three main areas.    First, IdeaPaint is a relatively healthy product.  It's formaldehyde-free and does not off-gas once it's dry.  Second, IdeaPaint requires less energy to make because it's stirred, whereas other dry-erase boards are baked and cured.  Third, IdeaPaint ships with less materials than other dry-erase products, and IdeaPaint doesn't require the kind of raw materials used in typical dry-erase products ( i.e. , wood, steel, aluminum, vinyl, or resin).  If you're an ideas person, you probably jot stuff down all the time.  I like to carry a moleskin or legal pad for those bursts of inspiration, but I kind of like the idea of covering a wall at work with this paint.  It could seriously come in handy.  What do you think? What if one day you woke up and the chatter in your mind had completely stopped and you where cognizant enough to know it? What if, in a short period of time, instead of worrying about your past, present situation or future you felt a complete sense of euphoria. Or what if one day you woke up and you could not remember how to speak, walk or understand language. What if you no longer could make sense of what your own body is, sounds and the boundaries between objects? You could experience all of this if you have a stroke in the left hemisphere of your brain as author Jill Bolte Taylor did at the age of 37. Join us for the Big Bang Book Club where we will read her book "My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey" Over the next eight years of her recovery, she turned her neuroscientist's eye on herself. Sahara Solar Project Could Make Germany Masters of the Solar Race

Jul 2, 2009

Cars are Germany’s principal employment generator. Come 2050, it could be the solar industry. Germany's Wuppertal Institute for Climate for Greenpeace and the Club of Rome says that if the right political push is given from now onwards, more than 580,000 jobs in concentrated solar power (CSP) could be created worldwide by the middle of this century. Concentrated solar power uses mirrors to harness the sun's rays to produce steam and drive turbines to produce electricity. Solar thermal power still remains more expensive than fossil fuels but political backing and government incentives could see a push in this area. But the project in the line of sight promises to tilt the scales on the side of power generation and employment. A project envisaged that will link power generated in Sahara to its use in Europe and North Africa could create 240,000 German jobs and generate 2 trillion Euros ($2,822 billion) worth of power by 2050. The study also projects that double that number of jobs could be created worldwide with the right political climate. Greenpeace energy expert Andree Boehling says , “Renewable energy could become Germany's leading industry in the 21st century. And concentrated ..

Like father, like son: Roger Pielke Sr. also doesn’t understand the science of global warming — or just chooses to willfully misrepresent it.

Jul 2, 2009

RealClimate has just eviscerated Roger Pielke, Sr. in an important post, “ More bubkes .”  I am going to excerpt it at length because: It thoroughly debunks some now-standard denier talking points on sea level rise, ocean heat content, and Arctic sea ice that the Pielkes, WattsUpWithThat, Inhofe, George Will and others have been pushing. It has some excellent figures, including ones from the recent major peer-reviewed synthesis report of climate science since the 2007 IPCC report (which I wrote about here ). Pielke Sr. accused me of “a failure to understand the physics of global warming and cooling” in a post ( here ) about ocean heat content (which was gleefully reprinted by the anti-scientific website WattsUpWithThat), even though, as RealClimate definitively shows, it is Pielke who either fails to understand the science or chooses to willfully misrepresent it. In my post “ Breaking: NOAA puts out ‘El Niño Watch,' so record temperatures are coming and this will be the hottest decade on record ,” I had noted that Pielke Sr. loves to cherry-pick climate data over short time spans to make misleading scientific claims about climate.  Climate..

Another ExxonMobil deceipt: They are still funding climate science deniers despite public pledge

Jul 2, 2009

In its May 2008 Corporate Citizenship Report , ExxonMobil promised: In 2008, we will discontinue contributions to several public policy research groups whose positions on climate change could divert attention from the important discussion on how the world will secure the energy required for economic growth in an environmentally responsible manner. Bullshit. Okay, you're not shocked.  Still, it is worth publicizing their deceipt, as the UK's Guardian did: ExxonMobil continuing to fund climate denial groups, records show The world's largest oil company is continuing to fund lobby groups that question the reality of global warming, despite a public pledge to cut support for such climate change denial, a new analysis shows. Company records show that ExxonMobil handed over hundreds of thousands of pounds to such lobby groups in 2008. These include the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) in Dallas, Texas, which received $75,000 (£45,500), and the Heritage Foundation in Washington DC, which received $50,000. According to Bob Ward, policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, at the London School of Economics, both the..

Looking for Green Business Ideas? Check Out Gil Friend’s “The Truth about Green Business”

Jul 2, 2009

Another book on green business? You may be tempted to wonder if we need another one. After all, there are already numerous classics on the subject ( The Ecology of Commerce , Natural Capitalism , Mid-Course Correction ), as well as more recent books that bring the subject of sustainable business into the 21st century ( Green to Gold , Strategies for the Green Economy ). What can Gil Friend, founder and CEO of consulting firm Natural Logic, add to the subject with his new book The Truth About Green Business ? ( Note: that paragraph’s brimming to the gills with affiliate links… ) The short answer, of course, is “a lot”: Gil’s spent nearly 40 years in the sustainable business field, so he’s able to address questions ranging from the general (”What’s the business case for green?”) to the very specific (”What elements should an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing program include?) with deep knowledge of green business ideas, as well as plenty of real-life examples. What makes the The Truth about Green Business really stand out, though, isn’t necessarily the quality of information, but the format of the book itself. Mos..

Green Bathroom Ideas

Jul 2, 2009

Adding pieces to your bathroom such as a dressing table or updated sink can be costly and a waste of raw materials. With a little creativity and a lot of ingenuity, you can transform regular pieces of furniture into functional bathroom items. The enhancements can make your bathroom appear like new in an eco-friendly way. There are a variety of inexpensive routes you can take to recreate your bathroom. For example, you can transform office furniture into multi-purpose pieces. A desk can be cut down to fit against the wall so it serves as a dressing table. The larger drawers can be taken out, and you can soften the look of the furniture by replacing the existing drawers with basket drawers. Although there will still be office like elements, small details and adjustments can detract from this. Another option is to convert bedroom end tables into single counters. Depending on the size of your bathroom , two counters spaced out from one another can give the illusion of a larger space. If you want the tables to have a sink, some physical modifications will need to be made. However, a vessel sink and gooseneck faucet can give the table a whole new purpose. These tables can also be used a..

Without knowing any different, one might assume that this was in reference to the climate bill currently being considered in the United States congress (and I had to check again myself), but alas, it was not. The article was about the climate legislation currently being considered and batted around in the Australian parliament. The similarities are striking.
